The Governors Are Coming!!!
In the coming weeks, DC will play host to another gathering of prominent politicians, aspiring politicos and policy wonks. No, there isn’t going to be a repeat of President Obama’s inauguration – the National Governors Association (NGA) will be holding its annual winter meeting.
Every year, the NGA invites the governors from all 50 states and the US territories to meet in Washington DC to discuss current trends in governing, demographic realities in the country, and best practices for state administrations. A quick look at this year’s agenda reveals non-partisan topics ranging from new mechanisms to employ people with disabilities to addressing cybersecurity needs on the state level in order to protect public safety infrastructure. Additionally, the event serves as a good vehicle for President Obama to meet with all the governors and express how hisadministration plans on working with all the states to tackle problems that require coordinated federal and state efforts.
On the political front, the NGA meeting in Washington DC serves as a great stage for aspiring politicos. Governors get a platform to highlight ideas and initiatives that are bettering the lives of their constituents, saving the taxpayers money, or making schools better. Political wonks that are trying to handicap the next series of major national races get an early preview of potential candidates for national office. There is a game to be played, but thankfully the score in this game is how political leaders can make the government work better – a bipartisan goal if there ever was one.
This year’s event kicks off on February 22nd and will be chronicled by multiple press conferences, media releases and photo opportunities. If you would like more information on the events surrounding the NGA or how you can participate please feel free to contact us.
